PML-F chief Pir Pagara passes away

Spiritual Leader of Hur Community and Chief of Pakistan Muslim League (Functional) Pir Mardan Shah-II, more commonly known as Pir Pagara, breathed his last at the age of 83 here on Tuesday, Geo News reported.

Pir Pagara was flown to London’s Wellington Hospital in an air-ambulance after suffering from an infection following his surgery in Karachi a few days ago, where he, reportedly, had shown some signs of improvement before his death.

Doctors at Wellington Hospital said the cause of death was cardiac arrest.

His funeral prayer will be offered here in London on Wednesday.

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight would fly his dead body back home on the same day.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani have telephoned Pir Pagaro’s sons in London and registered their condolences.

Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah has announced three-day mourning in Sindh.

Governor Sindh, Dr Isharat-ul-Ibad has also condoled with his heirs.

Pir Pagara spent a major part of his life being actively engaged in Pakistan’s politics.

He was born in Pir Jo Goth on November 22, 1928. He had his primary education at his birth-town. While his his father was under arrest, Khalifas at Dargah Sharif looked after his education.

In 1946 he was kept under house arrest along with his younger brother and family members in Karachi. He stayed for three years in Aligrah from 1943 to 1946. In 1946 he was shifted to Liverpool, England, where he was admitted in Majiour Davis Private School but was kept school-bound.

In 1949 Prime Minister Liaqut Ali Khan met him in England and assured him of restoration of his Status. On 4th February 1952 his status as Pir Pagara was officially restored with Dasterbandi.

Immediately after restoration of Gadi he had many challenges to face. Most important challenge was to restore the image of Hur Jamat. British during those last 30 years had tarnished the image of Jamat and projected the Jamat as terrorist. It was a big task to clarify the position of the Jamat and reorganize it, which he did with all his might.

Pir Sahib was very fond of hunting and horseracing. He owned many race-winning horses of rare pedigree. The credit of Karachi racecourse club’s restoration also goes to only Pir Sahib. Forecasting was also one of his hobbies. His political forecasts often came true. On top of all these, he was a first class cricketer as well.

During the colonial rule, his forebear Pir Syed Sibghtullah Shah Shaheed started armed struggle against the British in the form of Hur movement. The rulers were so scared of the movement that they assassinated Sibghtullah Shah Shaheed to control the movement. Thus Sibghtullah Shah Shaheed gave his life independence.

Pir Sahib also felt it was his duty to safeguard & maintain the sovereignty, integrity and independence of the homeland. In 1965, when India attacked Pakistan, Pir Sahib asked his followers to serve the country. About 20,000 volunteers came out and fought very bravely and captured many posts of India.

Similarly in 1971 by order of Pir sahib his followers volunteered and fought very bravely.

As far as his political party is concerned, in fifties, after the defeat of Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah at the hands of Field Marshall Ayub Khan in presidential run, Mohtarma declared the Muslim League as Functional and made Pir Pagaro the head of this faction of Pakistan Muslim League, which he led with grace till his death.

Memogate Scandal: How BlackBerry Set Works

blackberry Memogate Scandal: How BlackBerry Set Works

WOODBRIDGE, VA: As the memogate commission issued notices to various parties in the memogate investigation in Islamabad on Monday it will not be the testimony of ex-ambassador Husain Haqqani or the contents of the affidavit of former US national security adviser Gen James Jones or even the in-person testimony of American businessman Mansoor Ijaz that would matter.

It will be the forensic analysis of telephone records, e-mail exchanges and BlackBerry chats
that allegedly took place between Ijaz and Haqqani from May 9 to May 11. Phone records will be the easiest to ascertain and provide direct evidence and confirmation. But for most Pakistanis, the internal workings of a BlackBerry device are not that well understood. The forensic testing of Ijaz’s devices, which apparently still hold the original exchanges with Haqqani, and the ability to retrieve such data independently from Research In Motion Limited (RIM), the maker of BlackBerry devices, will be the key determining factor in whether memogate is consigned to the dustbin of history or is the hammer that nails the coffin shut of those who stand accused of committing such heinous crimes against the state.

Every BlackBerry device has a unique identifier called a PIN CODE. This PIN is an eight-digit alphanumeric which registers a particular handset for use on the RIM servers so that any user can reach any other user of BB services for minimal monthly cost.

Messages sent by BB Messenger are encrypted and cannot be seen by others in real time. Every BlackBerry device has a PIN, exactly like a fingerprint identifying the DNA of that particular handset. BBs are the device of choice among the professional class because a BlackBerry handset can exchange not only secure, encrypted chats between its users, but can also receive and send e-mails, SMS, MMS in addition to being utilized as a normal telephone.

BBs have the added feature of a PIN message that shows up in bright red font on a BB screen, that is only seen between two users chatting with each other (like a highly encrypted e-mail message from one mailbox to another). PIN messages appeared in the list of exchanges between Ijaz and Haqqani, according to Ijaz’s SC statement.

In the memogate case, some complex issues arise if there was an intent on the part of one or the other, or even both, protagonists (Ijaz and Haqqani) to delete, erase or modify the data in their handsets. Let’s start with what we know.

Ijaz has made publicly available 31 screen shots of his BB handset as part of his witness statement to the SC. If those screen shots reflect real data, then his handset holds sufficient evidence to be forensically examined and demonstrate that those conversations he claims took place between him and Haqqani were in fact real. Why so? Because Ijaz’s PIN is verifiable as belonging to him, and the incoming messages would have to have been received by the sender’s PIN, which is also recorded in Ijaz’s handset.

The harder part will be to ascertain whether the PIN associated with incoming BB messages sent to Ijaz’s device belonged to a handset used by Haqqani. The PIN is unique to the handset. The SIM card (and therefore the phone number that belongs to that particular SIM card) is not.

A SIM card for a telephone number belonging to Haqqani could theoretically be installed in a different handset than the one he was sending his BB chats from. Once used for the purpose intended, he could discard that BB handset, never to be seen again, and only RIM could confirm using Ijaz’s handset whether the chats did take place or not.

If, on the other hand, Haqqani used one of his two normal phone numbers to send BB chats to Ijaz (one issued for official use as ambassador – a 202 number, and one privately kept by Haqqani – a 617 number from his old days in Boston University’s employ that he used for non-government work), then RIM would have evidence of which SIM card, and therefore telephone number, was used to transmit the BB chats by that specific PIN code.

Commission investigators will have a tough time getting to the bottom of what phones Haqqani did or did not actually use.

He will have to be asked to produce the two handsets that had the PIN numbers disclosed by Ijaz as belonging to Haqqani on the days in May and in October/November when they allegedly exchanged large numbers of chat messages.

If he refuses, or cannot because the devices have been disposed of, the only other certain way to ascertain whether Haqqani sent the messages would be an unlikely confession or a Commission subpoena of data from RIM. This is being apparently done by the Commission. It may be hard to get but possible.

One other possibility exists. RIM could be subpoenaed to hand over all messages associated with the PIN codes allegedly used by Haqqani. Those messages would then identify PIN codes other than Ijaz’s, which would then confirm that Haqqani was in fact the sender because his chat list of contacts would be unique to him, and the PIN codes of others with whom he communicated could not be set aside so easily.

If history is any guide, the Commission will have its work cut out to demand anything from BB maker RIM. In August 2011, as youthful rioters were blackening the streets of Britain in a dramatic popular uprising, BBs were the communication tool of choice. As police work started and arrests were made, RIM pre-empted a move by Metropolitan Police authorities to get ahead of an onslaught of subpoenas by tweeting at the time: “We feel for those impacted by the riots in London. We have engaged with the authorities to assist in any way we can.”

With RIM’s cooperation, police would have been able to read and record in real time encrypted BBM messages between riot conspirators, pinpointing individuals and building evidence against them for use in court. Unlike the use of publicly available communication tools such as Facebook and Twitter during the “Arab Spring” uprisings, BB’s prominence as a person-to-person technology whose encrypted messages cannot be monitored in real time posed a great barrier to the police trying to stop Britain’s riots.

While privacy advocates may have come down on RIM for invasion of privacy with its offer to assist British police, the larger problem was, and for the memogate commission’s forensic investigators is, posed by Britain’s Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act. Its stringent provisions for protecting user rights would make it nearly impossible without long court battles to obtain RIM data even on national security grounds.

One way to resolve the legality issue and avoid subpoenas, etc would be for the commission to ask Ijaz, who has publicly committed his unfettered support to the investigation, to authorize RIM to release his records so that one side of this two-party equation is known with absolute certainty.

If the RIM-provided evidence shows that the telephone numbers (i.e., SIM card data) which conveyed BB chats received on his device belonged to Haqqani, the case is solved and the results are known with 100 pc accuracy regardless of whether Haqqani makes a single device or PIN or anything available to the Commission.

The Commission’s investigators will then have to make sure the SIM card data for BB chats verified by access to Ijaz’s handset is the same as it was then, that Haqqani did not somehow report his phones as lost or stolen only to bring his telephone numbers up on different SIM cards.

As a desperate act of last resort, is it possible that BB chat exchanges could be created, existing ones distorted or modified, or even permanently deleted from RIM servers?

Experts interviewed for this article said all were possible, but highly unlikely given the stakes of being discovered as evidence tampering.

Modification software on a device or computer holding backup records is easily detected and determined as to load time and keystrokes. Permanent deletion or any other manipulation of records on RIM’s servers would imply very high level complicity at a government and legal/judiciary level.

And if found out, would paralyse not just Pakistan, but also perhaps the US and UK governments as well.

RIM’s encrypted communications have ruffled feathers, particularly in repressive governments interested in stopping unwanted political speech. Several countries in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, threatened to ban BlackBerry services altogether if RIM didn’t give them access to BB chat exchanges, ostensibly for “counter-terrorism purposes”.
RIM reportedly agreed to provide access after a drawn out battle – time that the Pakistan Memogate Commission simply does not have.

NADRA to launch voter verification SMS facility

Voters can confirm registration by sending CNIC number to a specific code through text message.

National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) has decided to introduce a new SMS service which will allow voters to verify their vote registration and particulars in the voters lists, said Deputy Chairman Nadra Tariq Malik in a press release released Wednesday.

A press release from Deputy Chairman Nadra Tariq Malik says that the service will be launched after the publication of preliminary/unconfirmed electoral rolls (PER) for public display. Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is considering more than 50,000 display centers countrywide where PER will be displayed.

To avail the service, the potential voter will send his CNIC number to a certain code provided after which he will receive a message in Urdu which will confirm his registration, the location (electoral area) where the voter is registered and his serial number in electoral rolls.

Nadra and ECP signed agreements with three telecom companies on Wednesday to forge a partnership for the launch of this service, while Nadra has also developed an SMS service application.

While lauding the service and Nadra role’s, Secretary ECP Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan said that it is a milestone to facilitate the voters and it will be “a great convenience to the citizens to be able to check their vote status through e-governance using state-of-the-art technologies for the first time in the world.”

He appreciated the cooperation offered by the Ufone, Warid and Telenor in this effort leading towards free and fair elections in the country.

Reformed PBS set up

The government on Friday established an autonomous Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) by restructuring the entire national statistics system of the country.

The bureau has been set up after the merger of existing three data collecting agencies: Federal Bureau of Statistics; Population Census Organization; Agriculture Census Organization.

The affairs of the PBS would be supervised by a 10-member governing council, to be headed by the finance minister or the advisor to the prime minister on finance. The members would be appointed for a three-year term.

Finance Minister Dr Hafeez Shaikh, who briefed the media about the establishment of the PBS, announced a 10-member council.

Mr Shaikh appointed Mohsin Hassan Khan, a former IMF employee and Dr Shamshad Akhtar former governor of State Bank as council members.

Most council members hail from Punjab while Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have not been given representation.

Commenting on the composition of the council, the minister said that all members of the council have been appointed on merit.

However, provinces would be given representation in the National Users Council and Provincial Users Councils.

The users council would have an advisory role and would guide the statistical authority to fill in the gaps, if any, in the compilation of statistics.

The current body has more than 3,000 employees across the country. The employees would be given an option to join the PBS on contract or retain their government service, a senior official of the Bureau of Statistics said.

No existing employee of the Statistics Division would be laid off, Federal Secretary Asif Bajwa claimed.

He, however, did not elaborate how two tiers of employment — government and contract — would be retained.

The Finance Minister said that the PBS would be headed by a chief statistician who would be appointed from outside.

“We will soon advertise the post,” the minister said.

“How would PBS be autonomous if it depends on the government for funding?” he was asked. He claimed that it would be an autonomous body, and there would be no government intervention at any stage.

Secretary, Statistics Division, Asif Bajwa, said that salaries of those who would be hired from the private sector and the other expenses of the governing council would be met through selling of statistics to other organisations and the private sector.

“We will generate money by conducting studies,” he said.

The National Assembly passed the General Statistics (Reorganization) Act, 2011 on May 2 and by Senate on May 10 to make it a law.

The purpose of the Act is to produce reliable, authentic, timely and transparent data compatible with the needs of the economy and socio-economic development requirements of the nation.

From super-effective search tricks to Google tools specifically for education to tricks and tips for using Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Calendar, these tricks will surely save you some precious time.

 Search Tricks

These search tricks can save you time when researching online for your next project or just to find out what time it is across the world, so start using these right away.

Convert units. Whether you want to convert currency, American and metric units, or any other unit, try typing in the known unit and the unknown unit to find your answer (like “how many teaspoons in a tablespoon” or “10 US dollars in Euros”).

Do a timeline search. Use “view:timeline” followed by whatever you are researching to get a timeline for that topic.

Get around blocked sites. If you are having problems getting around a blocked site, just type “cache:website address” with website address being the address of the blocked site to use Google’s cached copy to get where you are going.

Use a tilde. Using a tilde (~) with a search term will bring you results with related search terms

Use the image search. Type in your search word, then select Images to use the image search when trying to put a picture to your term.

Get a definition. If you want a definition without having to track down an online (or a physical) dictionary, just type “definition:word” to find the definition of the word in your results (i.e.: “definition: serendipity” will track down the definition of the word “serendipity”).

Search within a specific website. If you know you want to look up Babe Ruth in Wikipedia, type in “site:wikipedia.org Babe Ruth” to go directly to the Wikipedia page about Babe Ruth. It works for any site, not just Wikipedia.

Search within a specific kind of site. If you know you only want results from an educational site, try “site:edu” or for a government site, try “site:gov” and your search term to get results only from sites with those web addresses.

Search for a specific file type. If you know you want a PDF (or maybe an MP3), just type in “filetype:pdf” and your search term to find results that are only in that file type.

Calculate with Google. Type in any normal mathematical expressions to get the answer immediately. For example, “2*4″ will get you the answer “8.”

Time. Enter “what time is it” and any location to find out the local time.

Find a term in a URL. This handy trick is especially useful when searching blogs, where dates are frequently used in the URL. If you want to know about a topic for that year only and not any other year, type “inurl:2009″ and your keyword to find results with your keyword in URLs with 2009 in them.

Use Show Options to refine your search. Click “Show Options” on your search result page to have access to tools that will help you filter and refine your results.

Search for a face. If you are looking for a person and not just their name, type “&imgtype=face” after the search results to narrow your results to those with images of faces.
